Brown Fat: Your Body’s Secret to Getting Lean and Looking Better.

Brown Fat: Your Body’s Secret to Getting Lean and Looking Better.

For most of our lives, we’ve been told that body fat is bad for you.

But the truth is much more complicated.

Researchers now know that there are two kinds of body fat: white adipose tissue (WAT), and brown adipose tissue (BAT).

Brown fat is unique in many ways, and learning to activate it may help you shed extra pounds and reveal a better body.

But how does it work?

Brown Fat Generates Heat and Burns Calories.

Unlike white fat, which insulates your body and organs, brown fat heats up and burns calories. This process is called thermogenesis.

That’s an important fact. (We’ll come back to that later.)

People with more brown fat in their bodies typically weigh less and are healthier.

Plus, brown fat helps control blood sugar and insulin, and may decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes.

But brown fat is found mostly in infants, and it slowly declines as we age.

Activating Your Body’s Brown Fat Naturally.

Most of the methods for increasing your brown fat and reducing your white fat are unsurprising.

There is still no easy, secret trick for burning belly fat… at least, not without damaging your health.

However, there are some simple techniques to boost your brown fat levels and improve your overall health.

#1: Cold Exposure.

Remember how we said that brown fat generates heat?

It turns out that your body creates more brown fat in response to cold weather. Makes sense, right?

And the good news is that you don’t have to freeze: 66°F is cold enough to trigger increases in brown fat.

However, the cold exposure must last at least two hours to have a noticeable effect. (Hey, at least you’ll save some money in the winter!)

#2: Exercise.

Like we said, most of the strategies for increasing brown fat levels are fairly straightforward.

But new research changes the equation of weight loss.

It’s not longer just that exercise burns calories. Regular exercise actually changes the way our bodies work, optimizing our natural ability to burn fat.

According to Prevention.com, “Newer research presented at the 2013 annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association found that exercise can prompt the browning of fat in men, with the benefits still increasing after 12 weeks of training on an exercise bike.”

#3: Get Better Sleep.

There are tons of reasons to get more, better-quality sleep.

But increasing your brown fat and improving your overall health and physique may be one of the most rewarding.

The most common problem people face with sleep in today’s world is simply excess light exposure.

Phones, computers, and televisions provide unnatural amounts of blue light, long after the sun has set.

That light has been proven to reduce melatonin production and ruin your sleep, according to research at Harvard.

And that ultimately ruins your long-term health, happiness, and body.
